Traffic from an AI interface is a measurement question, not only a visibility question. A mention in an answer, a referral click, an analytics session and a sale are four different events. Conflating them leads to claims the data did not measure.

01

Define each step in the journey

Set definitions before building a dashboard. A mention means the brand appeared in a sampled answer. A click requires a measured interaction to your domain. A session then depends on consent, attribution rules and analytics configuration.

Document limitations: an unreferenced visit can come from many sources, while a referral alone does not show whether an assistant recommended or merely cited a source.

02

Track referrers and conversions

In your analytics tool, inspect source and referrer values actually sent by browsers. For links you control, consistent UTM parameters help distinguish campaign visits; do not alter third-party links or assume one assistant always passes the same information.

Compare sessions, landing pages, engagement and business events. Keep a baseline period, check consent configuration and label small volumes as such instead of treating them as a firm trend.

03

Report answer observations separately

For model answer tracking, retain the prompt, date, language, market, system tested and observed answer. A reproducible sample allows a more honest comparison than a context-free score.

Show answer observations alongside visit data without claiming causation unless you have a method to establish it. Changes occurring at the same time do not prove one caused the other.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I know exactly how many sales an AI generated?

Only within the limits of available referrers, campaign parameters, consent and attribution models. Report the method and uncertainty with the result.

Does an answer mention mean my SEO is working?

It is an interesting observation, but not a universal SEO measurement. Combine Search Console data, analytics, conversions and qualitative answer review.
